LeBron James to Golden State? 2 Factors Make It the Obvious Choice
LeBron James is a free agent again, and the rumor mill has been running wild all offseason.
Over the past few weeks, his name has been connected to nearly every team across the NBA. But most consistently, it’s been the Cleveland Cavaliers, Miami Heat, Philadelphia 76ers, and Golden State Warriors.
But on Monday, the field reportedly got a lot smaller. According to Front Office Sports’ Alex Schiffer, James has narrowed his decision down to just two teams: Cleveland and Golden State.
Now, just 24 hours later, Colin Cowherd is making the case for why the Warriors might actually be the more likely, and more obvious, landing spot.

“Both offer a level of comfort. For Golden State, it’s his friendship with Draymond Green. With Cleveland, it’s home,” Cowherd said. “You ever have one of those decisions in life? A big decision’s coming, and you have a ‘Duh’ moment, like, ‘Oh, I should have figured that out’ … Remember what Rich Paul said was the number one priority for LeBron James. It was not winning championships. It was not money. He said it was fun and happiness. Is this going to be a decision to the Warriors and we go, ‘Oh, duh.'”
Cowherd broke down the logistics of a Gulfstream flight from the Bay Area to LA, which takes about 50 minutes, with an airport conveniently located near James’ house. The Warriors also play regularly against teams like the Los Angeles Clippers and Phoenix Suns, meaning frequent short trips home to see his family.
Cowherd also drew a comparison to Tom Brady’s move to Tampa, arguing that big free agent decisions often come down to comfort and lifestyle rather than purely basketball.
“I just look at this decision, and he’s close with Draymond. He vacations with Draymond. It’s an old smart team. He’s never liked playing with young guys. It’s a 50-minute golf stream … Proximity, friendships, golf, by his kids, by his family, is this going to be a duh? Of course he chose. Of course he chose it,” Cowherd said.
“Fun and happiness is Draymond. When you think of LeBron with James Harden, is that fun and happiness? Because that’s what Rich Paul told us was the most important thing, fun and happiness,” he added.

James already has a strong relationship with Green off the court. On the court, he’s developed a strong rapport with Steph Curry. He’s played under Steve Kerr for Team USA and would slot in perfectly next to Jimmy Butler and Kristaps Porzingis.
If winning one last championship was his only priority, you could make the argument that the 76ers or even the Cavs, who just went to the Eastern Conference Finals, are better choices, aside from other top contenders like New York and San Antonio.
But if it’s really fun and happiness that matter most, it’s hard to see him playing anywhere else other than Golden State. He can play alongside people he likes, and the pressure to win a title wouldn’t squarely be on his shoulders the way it would be with the Cavs. Go back to Cleveland, and everybody’s expecting one last Larry O’Brien trophy before you hang it up.
