Why is Desire Doue Not Starting for France against Spain at the 2026 World Cup?

France takes on Spain on in the 2026 World Cup semifinals at Dallas Stadium in Arlington, with a place in a third straight World Cup final on the line.

Both teams are in impressive forms with Spain boasting the best defense in the tournament so far. France's attack, meanwhile, is led by Kylian Mbappe who has already scored eight goals so far and is joint highest alongside Lionel Messi.

One of the biggest surprises in the starting lineup is the absence of Desire Doue, but the decision is based on tactics.

Why is Desire Doue Not Starting?

France head coach Didier Deschamps has chosen Bradley Barcola over Doue to better attack Spain's right side. While Doue has started regularly throughout the tournament, Deschamps believes Barcola's speed and direct style are a better fit against right back Pedro Porro.

Unlike Doue, who is known for his close control and creativity, Barcola is more dangerous in open space. With Lamine Yamal often drifting inside, Porro likes to push forward and join the attack. He even scored against Austria in the Round of 32 and Barcola's pace gives France a better chance to exploit the space Porro leaves behind.

Barcola has played in all six of France's World Cup matches, averaging 47 minutes per game while recording two goals and one assist. His speed and ability to attack on the counter fit Deschamps' game plan of sitting deep and taking advantage of the space behind Spain's high defensive line.
