TENINO - When Rochester took the field in Tenino on Tuesday, it had been 20 days since its last victory. The Warriors lost their last two games of March, most recently a loss to Raymond/South Bend on March 31, and they hadn't played a single game in the two weeks since.

Rochester coach Matt Ashton was worried that a slow start could have been in the works as the Warriors returned to action, but instead, they quickly built a 2-0 goal lead and eventually pulled away for a 6-2 victory.

"It was good seeing them get going," Ashton said with a smile postgame.

Rochester took control off the opening kick, immediately getting the ball upfield and generating a chance, and the Warriors got on the board first in the eighth minute on a goal from Christian Monroy.

Monroy split Tenino's back line and caught up to a through ball off the foot of Eduardo Herrera before promptly placing a shot in the bottom left corner.

Six minutes later, Aiden Villanueva was the beneficiary of an odd bounce, as he put home a rebound off the crossbar to make it 2-0.

"They set a tone there," Ashton said. "They're our playmakers. It's good to see them go."

Just as it looked like Rochester would roll, Tenino responded on the other end.

Some consistent pressure led to a corner kick, and Devyn Spears headed in a pass from Noah Suess to cut into the deficit.

Tenino's second goal later in the game was also off a corner from Suess, this time off a header from Radly Whitaker.

"Set pieces have been something we've been working on all season," Tenino coach Lee Baker said. "We have a lot of height, so it was really nice to see that pay off in a game. Not only the set pieces, but we had a lot of chances get away from us in the final third."

Unfortunately for the Beavers, that second goal was not to tie the game, but to cut into a larger deficit.

After Tenino's first goal, Rochester added two more goals to go into the break up 4-1. Anthony Garcia scored in the 31st minute, and Brandon Reyes-Ibarra notched a goal of his own in stoppage time.

Whitaker's goal came in the 48th minute to make it 4-2, and Villanueva put the finishing touches on a hat trick with two second-half goals. His second goal of the night came in the 56th minute on a looping top-corner shot from more than 25 yards out.

His third goal was similar to Rochester's first goal, as Villanueva was able to break through the back line before converting a Grade-A chance.

"The conditions were tough for us defensively," Baker said. "We were trying some different guys in different spots and a new formation as well. It kind of left us a little undermanned in the midfield but gave us the numbers going forward."

Tenino finishes the first half of its league slate 2-6, though a few of those losses could have gone the other way. Three of those losses came by two or fewer goals, including a one-goal loss against Montesano.

The second half of the Beavers' league schedule will begin on Thursday at home against Chief Leschi.

"The goal is to be at least one game better than we were in the first rotation," Baker said. "A lot of the results in the first half have been close with these good teams ... I think in the second half we can get a groove and start ruining some people's seeding."

Rochester (5-4, 5-3 1A Evergreen) will enter the second half of league play in the Evergreen's fourth and final postseason spot, one win and one tie of Elma and Montesano, which are tied for second.

The Warriors lost to Elma on March 14, but they'll get a chance at revenge on Thursday at home.

"Elma took it to us in the first game," Ashton said. "We need to try and get that back ... If we can spring two, three wins together, we can get back up in that higher group. This is a way to get us going that direction."
