In a recent opinion piece published in the Montana newspaper, Independent Record, Republican candidate for governor of Montana, Greg Gianforte, describes the Gateway Pacific coal export project at Xwe’chi’eXen (Cherry Point), as “the goose that is laying the golden egg,” the tiresome metaphor that has been overused (if it should ever have been used at all) by GPT proponents.
In another flourish, Gianforte then urges Washington Gov. Jay Inslee to visit Montana and look into the eyes of coal families. I wish for candidate Gianforte, and for all of us, that we, realizing that our life-support system requires critical care, will learn soon to look in whatever ways we can, into the eyes of each other, all of us, and perhaps into the eyes of our sister species of the Salish Sea.
What would happen if somehow, seeking hope for all families, we could look into the eyes of a killer whale? Would we begin to see that the real golden egg is wisdom?
