Says rising prices hurt jail vote

A few days ago the newspaper printed some possibilities of why the vote on the new jail failed.

The information was helpful but I believe left out a very important factor. I think that many seniors are feeling the pinch of money. All those receiving Social Security were informed that there would be no cost of living index with the explanation that since gas prices had decreased the COLA did not take affect. Just look at prices and tell me that things haven’t gone up in price like food, clothing, home and car repairs. Secondly the city just re-assessed our homes.

This means I’ll be paying more real estate taxes. I’d like to find someone to buy my house at the new assessment value. I can’t find anyone who will pay that much, maybe the assessor can.

Yes, I know, its just a few pennies more to build a jail but those pennies add up and I believe I, and many other seniors on fixed incomes have reached their limit.

Slightly off the topic: Why is money spent on roundabouts and bike lane changes when so many of our streets need repair and repaving? How about putting more money into the maintenance of the streets instead of trying to make our city so bike friendly?
