It was said lately that Bellingham can’t support the new jail proposal since it would cap out the sales tax increases available to the city. I believe that can’t be correct, and that some effort will be made by both our Bellingham City Council and our mayor to set these misconceptions straight.
It would be profoundly unsettling to me as a taxpayer to realize our much-needed jail will be downsized or not built because the mayor or various City Council members have political debts outstanding. Perhaps these debts obligate all the remaining sales tax of the city to various political powers such as the Bellingham Police Department or the Bellingham firemen and their unions.
