Quick action prevents tragedy

Kudos to Whatcom County Sheriff’s Department and the Harbormaster’s Office at Squalicum Harbor. There are times in life when people step up and go beyond what’s expected. We saw this demonstrated recently here at Squalicum Harbor. Our UPS delivery person was involved in an awful accident right in front of the Harbormaster’s Office. Quick thinking by not only the Sheriff’s deputy for blocking the UPS truck but staff at the Harbormaster’s Office helped prevent a horrible tragedy. Everyone here in the Harbor loves our UPS man. When word spread he was the one in the accident, people actually teared up not knowing if he was OK. Dewayne Merrick has a smile on his face every time he comes into our office — no exceptions. Our hearts just broke thinking we would not see him again. There are very few people who cross our paths with such a wonderful disposition! We all count ourselves lucky to have Dewayne, or Chester as we call him, in our lives! Thank you to everyone for taking quick action to get him to the hospital! We can’t wait to see him back here in the harbor with that big, infectious smile!
