Thank you for the informative article by Ralph Schwartz in the June 8 Bellingham Herald. He reported that conservatives on the county Charter Review Commission wanted to de-fund “special interest groups” that support environmental causes in the county.
The groups they have chosen to target — ReSources for Sustainable Communities, Futurewise, and other “green” non-profits — provide an important function, such as monitoring compliance with existing local, state and federal laws and regulations that are designed to protect our communities and our environment. If commission members Michele Luke, Yvonne Goldsmith, Ben Elenbaas, and others, have problems with these laws and regulations, they should make their views known to lawmakers.
These “green” organizations provide important services for our community, bringing knowledge, expertise and experience that many of us lack. I am grateful for their helping to preserve this incredible environment that we all enjoy in Whatcom county.
