A cold snap is coming. It could mean snow for Bellingham and Whatcom County lowlands
After a relatively mild start to winter, temperatures are expected to turn cold next week with an outside chance of the season’s first snow in lowland Whatcom County.
A storm breezes through this weekend, bringing rain and wind to the lowlands and heavy snow in the mountains, according to the latest Bellingham forecast from the National Weather Service in Seattle.
“It’s really a system that’s ushering in heavy mountain snow, but there’s also some cold air behind it,” meteorologist Jacob DeFlitch said Tuesday. “The cooler air looks to stick around after this week.”
Overnight lows could drop into the 20s late next week, with daytime highs in the 30s.
But late next week is a long way away when it comes to weather forecasting, DeFlitch said.
“It’s going to be cool enough for snow in the lowlands. We’ll have to monitor how low the snow levels will get,” he said.
Canadian forecasters are seeing cooler temperatures, too.
Environment Canada is showing a chance of flurries and periods of snow as early as next weekend for Abbotsford, B.C., which is just north of Lynden.
Weather apps on smartphones also are seeing the possibility of below-freezing temperatures and snow about a week away.
