Whatcom County spared the searing heat elsewhere in U.S. That could change soon
Northwest Washington could be in for its first big heat wave of the season, according to meteorologists at the National Weather Service in Seattle.
In its afternoon briefing Thursday, the weather service warned that “there is an emerging signal of a potential multi-day heat event” that could bring temperatures in the Puget Sound region to 90 degrees or warmer starting Aug. 13.
”There’s definitely been some signs emerging that point toward a period of above-average temperatures. It’s a ways out, so confidence is not high. A lot can change, but people should definitely be prepared,” meteorologist Devorea McMillian said.
“We can’t rule out the likelihood of temperatures in the 90s,” McMillian told The Bellingham Herald in an interview.
June and July were slightly warmer than normal in Bellingham and the rest of Whatcom County.
But so far this summer, Northwest Washington has been spared the searing heat that’s been baking the Southwest and other parts of the country.
In the Friday forecast discussion at the National Weather Service website, meteorologist Reid Wolcott said high pressure may build over the Puget Sound region around Aug. 13-16, with a 40% chance of ‘an excessive heat event.”
