Season’s first heat wave projected to bake Whatcom County. Here’s how hot it will get
Western Washington soon will see its first big heat wave of the season with temperatures rising to 20 degrees or more above normal for Mother’s Day weekend.
Long-range forecasts from the National Weather Service in Seattle show a growing ridge of high pressure that will bring sunny skies and steadily warming temperatures all this week.
A temperature spike this weekend means that heat records could fall in Bellingham, meteorologist Jacob DeFlitch told The Bellingham Herald.
“I think there is the potential there. It will certainly be the hottest period that we’ve seen this year,” DeFlitch said.
Bellingham will see highs in the upper 70s to low 80s later this week, and parts of inland Whatcom County such as Lynden and Sumas could see the mercury top 90 degrees by Sunday and Monday, DeFlitch said.
Normal high temperatures for early May in Bellingham are in the low 60s, according to records from Bellingham International Airport.
