More snow is heading for Bellingham and the Whatcom County lowlands this weekend and early next week, as overnight temperatures remain below freezing even though the arctic chill will ease gradually.

A winter winter weather advisory issued early Saturday said snow accumulations of up to 10 inches are expected. Travel could be very difficult, according to the National Weather Service.

Thermometers rose above freezing on Friday afternoon, Feb. 24, for the first time in two days and a morning low of 19 degrees Friday broke the record for the date from 2011.

Temperatures were expected to continue rising with a forecast high of 39 degrees Saturday, Feb. 25, and 43 degrees Sunday, Feb. 26.

But the mercury will drop close to freezing overnight Saturday and Sunday, and accumulations of 2 inches were noted in the forecast Saturday morning.

Whatcom County should start seeing snow by late Saturday afternoon, said meteorologist Trent Davis at the National Weather Service in Seattle.

“Snow levels do look to drop down again Sunday night so precipitation should transition back to mostly snow by Monday morning,” Davis said.
