Valentine’s Day snow? Whatcom forecast has a cold, cold heart

Colder temperatures and a chance of snow return next week, reminding Whatcom County that winter’s only halfway over.

Forecasts from the National Weather Service in Seattle show that a cold front will sweep south from the Gulf of Alaska on Monday, Feb. 13, along with a storm system that will drop snow levels to around 1,000 feet — about the height of foothills around Bellingham.

A small amount of snow in Bellingham and the Whatcom County lowlands is possible, meteorologist Carly Kovacik said in the online forecast discussion.

“This does not look like any noteworthy lowland winter event. Just a quick period of colder weather with some flakes possible,” Kovacik said.

“With enough influence still expected to be over the area into Tuesday morning (Feb. 14), and snow levels continuing to take a tumble to 500 to 1,000 feet, a rain-snow mix will be possible across portions of the lowlands, with snow the guaranteed precipitation type in the mountains and adjacent foothills,” she said.

Cold weather will linger into midweek with snow levels around 1,000 feet or lower into Wednesday, Feb. 15, along with temperatures in the low to mid-30s, according to the forecast.

Another round of light snow or a rain-snow mix is possible Wednesday morning, Kovacik said.
