With cold coming to Whatcom County, now is a good time to check your pipes. Here’s how

Temperatures in Whatcom County are going to be below freezing for the next few days, so now is a good time to check your pipes. Freezing temperatures can cause significant damage to pipes, which can be significantly expensive to repair.

Barron Heating Director of Sales & Marketing Merrill Bevan shared this information from Plumbing Service & Operations Manager Jordan Forbes:

Inspect all outdoor hose connections: Outdoor hose connections are the most vulnerable to freezing temperatures. Because of how the hose connection is built, damages may be unnoticeable until they are used under pressure. Replacing these connections is extremely common in the spring.

Exposed water lines: Inspect all over the house, crawl space, attic, cabinets and water heater, for exposed water lines that are not insulated by the building.

Verify irrigation systems are shut down: If these are not shut down, they can freeze, resulting in an expensive repair and water bill.

Locate main water shutoff: If something does happen, it is important to shut off the water as quickly as possible.

“Inspect all condensing mechanical equipment, condensate drain runs and termination points for freezing potential. This would include condensate lines from a high-efficiency furnace or tankless water heater,” Bevan said. According to Forbes, one of the most common service calls is equipment errors due to frozen condensate drains.
