Hoping for another white Christmas? Your Whatcom dream might come true
If you’re looking for a repeat of last year’s Christmas snow, things just started looking up.
Much colder temperatures are in the forecast for Western Washington starting later this week, with daytime highs in the 30s and overnight lows in the 20s.
“Chances for precipitation and even colder temperatures could arrive this weekend, resulting in a renewed threat of lowland snow. Below-normal temperatures are favored into January,” the National Weather Service in Seattle said in its afternoon online briefing.
Both the National Weather Service and Environment Canada show lowland snow for Saturday, Dec. 17, and Sunday, Dec. 18, in Bellingham and near Abbotsford, B.C., just across the U.S.-Canada border.
A high-pressure ridge that’s keeping Bellingham and Whatcom County relatively sunny this week will begin to dissipate, allowing storms into Western Washington, said meteorologist Kayla Mazurkiewicz in the online forecast discussion.
With temperatures remaining cold well into next week, that means there’s a greater chance of having the archetypal white Christmas than the normal average of 4%.
