Another storm’s on the way, with a chance of lowland snow and wind for Whatcom
Bellingham and other lowland Whatcom County residents could wake up to a little snow this weekend, as temperatures remain cold and another storm will bring wind, rain and maybe some flakes.
Rain is expected Friday, Dec. 9, and will possibly turn to snow overnight.
Significant accumulations aren’t expected, but the rain-snow mix with temperatures around the freezing mark could make roads slick in the early morning hours of early Saturday, Dec. 10.
Another round of gusty southeast winds was expected with Friday night’s storm, prompting a wind advisory for east winds at 25-35 mph, gusting to 45 mph, through 10 a.m. Saturday.
A few power outages were possible.
Snow will change to rain as temperatures rise later in the morning, but Saturday will stay unseasonable cold, with highs in the low 40s.
Environment Canada was also calling for snow or rain early Saturday in Abbotsford, B.C., across the border from Lynden and Sumas.
Snow is likely for the North Cascades, and the Mt. Baker Ski Area was reporting excellent conditions with lots of new powder on Thursday, Dec. 8.
A winter storm warning was in effect until 4 p.m. Saturday, with up to 2 feet of new snow possible.
For winter sports enthusiasts heading into the Mount Baker wilderness, the avalanche danger was listed as “moderate” on Friday on the west slopes of the North Cascades, according to the Northwest Avalanche Center.
