It’s getting cold again. Is it time to say the ‘S’ word?

A low-pressure system and colder temperatures bring the possibility of snow for the hills around Bellingham and other parts of lowland Whatcom County this weekend.

Heavier snow might be just around the corner.

A long-range forecast from the National Weather Service in Seattle hinted at the possibility of snow or a rain-snow mix Saturday night, Nov. 26, and Sunday morning, Nov. 27.

“With lows in the 30s, there is the chance of some mixed precipitation in some of the higher hills, particularly the northern Olympic Peninsula and Whatcom County during the overnight hours,” meteorologist Mary Butwin said in the online forecast discussion Wednesday, Nov. 23.

Any significant snow accumulation is unlikely this weekend, Butwin said.

But next week is a wild card — especially Monday, Nov. 28, and Tuesday, Nov. 29.

“While the chance of lowland snow will be increasing, the probability of it happening (as well as amounts if it does) varies greatly from location to location,” Butwin said.

“Right now, the most probable locations would be the north side of the Olympic Peninsula and Western Whatcom county due to some possible Fraser River outflow starting,” she said.

With a storm system set to sweep Western Washington about the same time, some forecasting models “are suggesting the potential for a widespread lowland snow event,” she said.

Environment Canada is watching the weather models too, and its forecast for Abbotsford, B.C., calls for the possibility of snow from Sunday through Tuesday.
