Here are the top Bellingham roads to avoid in ice, snow

Freezing temperatures are already hitting Bellingham and that means city street crews are applying de-icing treatment on main roadways to prevent cars from losing traction or sliding out.

Not all streets in town receive treatment and some are considered particularly dangerous to drive on, according to Bellingham Public Works spokesperson Amy Cloud.

Here are the streets you may want to avoid driving during periods of inclement weather:

Mill Avenue above Samish Way.

Knox Avenue.

All the South Hill neighborhood streets headed down toward Boulevard at the waterfront.

Alabama Street hill.

Ferry Avenue above 32nd Street near Sehome High School.

Yew Street hill.

Academy Street off of North Shore Drive near Lake Whatcom.

Streets are all affected differently depending on the type of weather event, shade, humidity or traffic, Cloud wrote in an email to The Bellingham Herald.

So it’s best to be prepared. Have chains and know how to put them on, have a shovel and sand, use public transportation or stay home if it’s possible to work remotely, Cloud wrote.

For those who must drive in the snow or ice, here are some helpful tips, according to DrivingTips.com.

Prepare snow essentials.

Change into winter tires.

Check road conditions.

Slow down.

Leave a safe distance.

Never turn on cruise control.

Learn how to handle a skid.

Use anti-lock brakes properly.
