Weekend storm will bring wind, rain and rising water to Whatcom. What about Halloween?
A wet and windy storm is headed toward Western Washington this weekend, just in time to drench Halloween parties and toss around seasonal decorations.
But the holiday itself could see showers rather than a downpour in Bellingham and Whatcom County, said Dustin Guy, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service in Seattle.
“If you have any outdoor plans, you might want to get them in before Sunday (Oct. 30),” Guy told The Bellingham Herald.
Strong winds and heavy rain are expected starting late Saturday night, Oct. 29, and lasting into Sunday, Guy said.
That should taper off to showers by the time when many children are trick-or-treating outside Monday, Oct. 31.
“Monday afternoon and evening might be OK. I’m not saying it will be bone-dry,” he said.
Bellingham and lowland Whatcom County could get 2 to 3 inches of rain from Saturday night through Monday morning, according to an emailed briefing from the National Weather Service.
That much rain would give Bellingham a “normal” level of October rainfall, after a dry start to the rainy season.
Rain is also forecast for the North Cascades below 6,000 feet, and several feet of snow that’s on the ground could melt into the Nooksack River.
“That’s something we’ll have to keep an eye on. The rivers will see some substantial rises,” Guy said.
There’s no immediate forecast for lowland flooding, however, and the Northwest River Forecast Center shows the Nooksack creating well below flood stage Monday in both Nugents Corner and Ferndale.
