Air quality remains unhealthy in Whatcom Sunday. Here’s where

Air quality remained unhealthy in Bellingham Sunday morning, Sept. 11, according to the Washington State Department of Ecology online map. Maple Falls in northeastern Whatcom County also showed unhealthy air quality. The Custer station showed moderate air quality.

When the air quality is listed as unhealthy, everyone should reduce exposure by limiting time outside, avoiding strenuous outdoor activity, and following tips for cleaner indoor air. Moderate air quality is considered unhealthy for sensitive people, including young children and older adults, and those with respiratory conditions such as asthma.

Dry and unstable conditions continue in the Cascades, according to the National Weather Service Seattle office Sunday morning forecast. Critical fire weather conditions continue with high temperatures forecast to be in the mid-70s to lower 80s. Less wind and higher humidity should lower fire weather danger in the lowlands.

However, lingering wildfire smoke is likely, the weather service reported.

The Chilliwack Complex fire, which started Aug. 25, has reached 5,338 acres 40 miles northeast of Bellingham, according to the Northwest Interagency Coordination Center morning report. It includes 11 fires in the North Cascades National Park.

The Interagency Coordination Center online briefing reports the fire danger has reached a peak and will decline from west to east across both Oregon and Washington in coming days as temperatures cool and humidity rises.

Near normal conditions with lower threat levels for fire weather danger return Monday, according to the weather service.
