Heat will bake Whatcom again. Here’s what to know

Another stretch of unseasonably warm weather begins this weekend, with highs in the 80s and possibly 90s for Bellingham and inland Whatcom County.

High pressure will bring fair skies through early next week and push daytime temperatures at least 10 degrees above normal for early August, the National Weather Service said in its online forecast for Western Washington.

“Monday will feature one last hot day before temperatures trend downward. Temperatures are on track to return to near seasonal values around midweek,” meteorologist Devorea McMillian said.

Overnight lows will remain in the high 50s to low 60s, meaning there will be less relief from the heat at night.

Once again, Whatcom County residents might see some hazy skies and brilliant sunsets caused by wildfire smoke in the upper atmosphere, but its effects on air quality are expected to be limited, the state Department of Ecology said online.

“So far smoke impacts this year have been minimal, and thankfully fire crews have been able to concentrate resources effectively to minimize fire growth. However, another heat wave is expected next week, so fire growth and new fires will continue to be a concern,” Farren Thorpe said.
