Here’s where you can keep cool as heat wave bakes Whatcom County
As a mid-summer heat wave bakes Western Washington, officials in Whatcom County are offering several air-conditioned sites where residents can stay cool during the hottest part of the day.
A heat advisory has been issued through Friday night, July 29, and the National Weather Service in Seattle is expecting temperatures from the mid-80s near the coast in Bellingham and Whatcom County to the upper 90s farther inland.
Air-conditioned libraries the Whatcom County Library System include Blaine, Deming, Everson, Ferndale, Lummi Island, Lynden, Kendall, Point Roberts and Sudden Valley, the county said at its general news website on Tuesday, July 26.
Other air-conditioned locations include Base Camp in Bellingham, Lynden Community and Senior Center, Ferndale City Hall, Ferndale Public Library, Pioneer Pavilion in Ferndale and the East Whatcom Regional Resource Center in Kendall.
“Additionally, Whatcom County is actively working with community partners to get air conditioning installed in shelters like the YWCA, Sun House, DVSAS, Garden View Village and HomesNOW villages,” the website said.
“In response to community members who are unsheltered and some of our most vulnerable to extreme heat and the poor air quality, the recently expanded Homeless Outreach Team, based at the Opportunity Council, will be making extra rounds to communicate and provide resources so that people are aware of and have resources to better manage the challenges that extreme weather can present,” the website site.
Bellingham Public Library is not air-conditioned, but a plan to install air conditioning has been approved.
