Whatcom’s foggy weather having an impact on travel at Bellingham International Airport
The fog that has hovered around Whatcom County Sunday and Monday and is forecast to stick around for a couple of days has impacted travel at Bellingham International Airport.
“Weather is currently impacting flights in and out of BLI,” a tweet by the airport Monday, Jan. 24, read. “The fog is forecasted through Thursday so please check directly with your airline on flight status.”
Through noon Monday, the limited visibility created by the fog has impacted 14 flights that were scheduled to depart from Bellingham International since Sunday morning and 14 more flights scheduled to arrive, Port of Bellingham Director of Aviation Sunil Harman told The Bellingham Herald in an email.
“The weather related disruptions have resulted in 11 cancellations of SEA flights and as may arrivals making it the most impacted route,” Harman wrote. “Other impacts have been severe delays to departures as well as several diversions.
“Although conditions have improved today, fog is forecast for Tuesday and Wednesday.”
Harman reiterated the recommendations from the tweet, suggesting all travelers, as well as those planning to meet travelers, confirm flight schedules before heading to the airport.
Whatcom County will be under an air stagnation advisory through noon on Wednesday, Jan. 26, according to the National Weather Service, and the potential for fog remains in the forecast through Thursday morning.
