Will August heat finally arrive in Whatcom County this weekend?
What’s been a mild August is about to change this weekend as temperatures climb into the 80s and possibly higher across Whatcom County for several days.
That’s 15 degrees or more above the normal August high temperature of 72, according to National Weather Service records.
Meteorologists in Seattle said a high-pressure system will create an “offshore flow,” meaning warm air from Eastern Washington will cook the Northwest.
Highs are expected in the mid-80s in Bellingham but it will be much warmer across inland Whatcom County.
Environment Canada predicts highs in the low 90s for Abbotsford, B.C., just northeast of Lynden.
A high of 85 degrees is the warmest it’s been this year — on July 21 and June 12, records show.
Temperatures will remain hot through Monday night, when marine air returns and Tuesday’s highs drop to the mid-70s, according to the weather service’s online forecast.
Overnight lows will be in the 50s.
