After two months of almost constant showers, rain and gloom, Whatcom gets a break

Sunny skies are in the Whatcom County forecast this weekend after two months of almost constant showers, rain and gloom, according to forecasts from the National Weather Service and Environment Canada.

Rain continues until early Saturday, changing to clouds and then clearing through Monday, Feb. 10.

Highs will be in the upper 40s with lows in the mid-30s through Monday.

Southern Whatcom County will be breezy, with winds to 20 mph and gusts to 25 mph. Northern Whatcom County could see winds of 30 to 40 mph.

A flood watch was canceled for Whatcom County and the Northwest River Forecast Centers shows water levels below flood stage along the Nooksack River.

The threat of landslides continues as soil remains saturated.

A winter storm warning is in effect for the Mount Baker wilderness above 3,000 feet. Some 10 to 20 inches of snow is possible.

Avalanche conditions are “considerable” to “high” in the mountain backcountry, according to the Northwest Avalanche Center.

Because of local stagnant air conditions, officials at the Northwest Clean Air Agency urged residents of Columbia Valley, Peaceful Valley and Paradise Lakes around Kendall to limit burning wood for heat over the weekend.
