Damage from this week’s storms has closed Woburn Street north of Lakeway Drive, a busy connector to the city’s northern neighborhoods.

Bellingham Public Works officials announced the closure Friday afternoon on the city’s social media.

“Earlier today, crews noticed a new indentation in the street where it crosses Cemetery Creek. The street was closed as a precaution while we investigate the underlying cause,” Public Works Department spokeswoman Riley Grant told The Bellingham Herald in an email.

Woburn Street, which is also the main entrance to Bayview Cemetery and the Moles funeral chapel, is closed to all traffic between Lakeway Drive and Fraser streets and is open to local traffic only from Fraser to Iowa streets.

Observers told The Herald that they saw the road sagging near the cemetery on Friday morning.

Bellingham doesn’t have accurate traffic information for that stretch of Woburn because it was closed for replacement of a sewer line between Woburn and Fraser streets. A sewer line was also replaced on Woburn between Alabama Street and Barkley Boulevard at that time.

A Whatcom Council of Governments traffic survey from 2017 showed that 8,000 cars and trucks use Woburn at Lakeway.

Woburn, which becomes Hannegan Road north of Bakerview Road, is also closed indefinitely from Bakerview to Smith roads because of a culvert that collapsed during this week’s rainstorms.
