Lengthy detour set for Hannegan Road in Bellingham after storm damage

Hannegan Road will be closed indefinitely for repairs after the roadway — among the city’s major commuter routes — suffered serious damage from this week’s storm, Bellingham officials said Thursday.

A “substantial culvert failure caused by recent heavy rainfall” forced closure of the road between Bakerview Road and Van Wyck Road, the city said in its weekly newsletter.

“Detour signs are in place directing drivers to Guide Meridian and Smith Road. We anticipate the road being closed for the foreseeable future while we determine a plan to make necessary repairs and stabilize the roadway,” the city said.

Hannegan Road sees traffic of 13,500 cars and trucks daily at Bakerview Road.
