Expect delays as installation of traffic light in Fairhaven resumes
Expect traffic delays through Fairhaven for the next several weeks as a project that started earlier this year gets going again Monday.
Workers will be installing a traffic signal where Finnegan Way becomes 12th Street at the corner of Mill Avenue, the main north-south route through Fairhaven. That project resumes Monday, the city said at its website.
It’s part of a project that started earlier this year with new flashing crosswalks on 12th Street at McKenzie Avenue and on Finnegan Way at 11th Street. It was paused in June while waiting for the traffic signal materials to be delivered.
“More than 10,000 vehicles use this intersection daily, and the new signal will boost visibility and safety for everyone on the road. This is the final step in a project that added flashing crosswalks, sidewalks, and on-street parking in the area earlier this year. Thanks for your patience as we work to make this area safer,” the city said.
Construction is expected to last until mid-October.
Timing of the new light will be synchronized to the one located a block south at 12th Street and Harris Avenue, according to previous Herald reporting.
Increased traffic is expected with the upcoming construction of a parking garage and buildings at the site of “The Pit,” a dirt lot at 11th Street and Mill Avenue.
