Delays expected with daytime Interstate 5 north lane closure through Bellingham this week

One lane of northbound Interstate 5 will be closed in Bellingham for two days this week to repair damage from a landslide last year.

The right lane of northbound I-5 between Iowa Street and Sunset Drive will be closed from 4 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 25, and Wednesday, March 26.

Both on- and off-ramps at Iowa Street and Sunset Drive will remain open, the Washington State Department of Transportation said in a statement late Monday.

“During this lane closure WSDOT maintenance crews will rebuild the slope along I-5 that sloughed off during heavy rains in October 2024. People should allow for additional travel time and expect delays in this area, especially during the morning commute,” WSDOT said.

I-5 was closed for 10-hours when a landslide triggered by torrential rain blocked the freeway, according to previous Bellingham Herald reporting.

A passenger car and a semi-truck were trapped by mud, rock and trees that swept onto the freeway when a piece of carpet padding blocked a culvert above the road, causing water to undermine the hillside.
