Drivers heading south on Interstate 5 from Bellingham can expect delays this week from a tree-removal project near Lake Samish that caused a 7-mile backup on Monday, the Washington State Department of Transportation said.

Southbound I-5 will be reduced to one lane between North Lake Samish and Nulle Road for hazardous tree removal and maintenance from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday, WSDOT’s Madison Sehlke told The Bellingham Herald in an email.

That’s from milepost 246 to milepost 244.

Work in the area caused a seven-mile backup on Monday, WSDOT tweeted about 3 p.m.

Sehlke said drivers who weren’t using the “zipper” maneuver at the closure point were to blame.

“Our crews pointed out that people were going through the closure just fine, an issue they saw was people weren’t zipper merging (and) were having trouble merging,” Sehlke said.
