Expect delays this weekend as work continues at new Whatcom County roundabout

Utility work will cause delays at the finishing touches are being put on the new roundabout at Smith and Hannegan roads north of Bellingham.

Puget Sound Energy will be installing power poles and lines at the new roundabout’s south, east, and north legs, the Whatcom County Department of Public Works said in a statement.

Work is scheduled to start at noon Friday and continue until about 5 a.m. Sunday, Public Works said.

Traffic will be most affected between 4 a.m. and 10 p.m. Saturday.

“During this time, cranes will be on-site, and the northbound leg of the roundabout will be closed. Please anticipate flagger-controlled traffic at each leg of the roundabout with alternating travel,” Public Works said.

Public Works said PSE’s work couldn’t start until after the roundabout was finished.
