Semitruck driver arrested for DUI after I-5 collision slows traffic for two hours
A collision involving a semitruck on I-5 northbound just south of Lakeway Drive blocked the left lane for nearly two hours Wednesday afternoon.
The driver of the semitruck was arrested for DUI. Since he was operating a large machine on the road while impaired, Kulwinder Singh Bahat, 48, also was arrested for reckless endangerment as it created a substantial risk of injury or death to other drivers, State Trooper Kelsey Harding told The Bellingham Herald. The driver also had a passenger in the truck with him.
No injuries were reported in the collision, although another vehicle was damaged when the semitruck collided with the median and sent debris into the air, which struck a Subaru Legacy.
Traffic was backed up on the highway to Old Fairhaven Parkway just before 1 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 27, WSDOT highway cameras show. Traffic on both lanes of I-5 was cleared and running smoothly by 2:50 p.m.
Fire assistance, the Incident Response Team, a tow truck and the Washington State Patrol were the first to respond to the scene.
