A man was thrown from his motorcycle and landed in the oncoming lane of traffic, where he was hit by another vehicle in a collision Wednesday on I-5 at Sunset Drive. The man was taken to St. Joseph Medical Center in Bellingham.

The incident occurred around 12:50 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 7. It caused a traffic backup on I-5 in both directions for several hours Wednesday because of this collision.

The motorcyclist, Michael R. Hammond, 33, was attempting to drive between two cars, a move called “lane-splitting,” while heading southbound, according to police. He struck both vehicles and was thrown from the motorcycle into the northbound lane of traffic.

Lane-splitting is an illegal maneuver in Washington state.

No other injuries were reported at the collision.
