Collision with sheriff’s office patrol vehicle sends 2 to hospital

A collision involving two vehicles, including a Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office patrol vehicle, sent both drivers to St. Joesph’s Hospital, according to a news release from Washington State Patrol.

Their conditions were not immediately released.

The patrol vehicle had its lights and sirens on and was heading south on Guide Meridian Road, near the intersection with East Kellogg Road. The collision occurred around 6:10 a.m. Wednesday, July 5.

The patrol vehicle entered the intersection and collided with the passenger side of the second vehicle, driven by Hailey M. Bergquist, 22, of Ferndale. Bergquist was entering the intersection when her vehicle was struck, according to Washington State Patrol.

The sheriff’s vehicle was driven by Deputy Sheriff Ryan Rathbun, 44 who was responding to a S.W.A.T. call, according to spokeswoman Deb Slater with the Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office.
