Here’s where you’ll find road work delays in Whatcom and Skagit counties
A full closure of East Badger Road is planned for 5 p.m. Monday, Aug. 1, through to 6 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 6, just east of Guide Meridian at milepost 16 to just east of Double Ditch Road at milepost 51.
Crews will work around the clock on the Pepin Creek and Duffner Ditch fish passage project, according to the Washington State Department of Transportation’s weekly traffic information statement.
Work associated with this fish passage project will not be conducted during the Northwest Washington Fair from Aug. 11-20, WSDOT said.
A signed detour will send drivers around the work zone using Pole Road, Highway 9, and Guide Meridian Road.
▪ From 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 2 through Thursday, Aug. 4, northbound and southbound traffic on Highway 9 from the roundabout at Nugents Corner to Garfield Street in Sumas will alternate through a single lane for crack seal and pavement repair.
▪ Work on Samish Way at Mill Avenue, where a pedestrian access ramp is being built, could cause traffic delays — including road closures and one-way access along Samish Way. Detours will be posted, according to a weekly traffic update from the city of Bellingham.
Continuing projects
▪ Whatcom County Public Works continues its annual summer chip-sealing to resurface roads. These roads are scheduled for resurfacing during the week of Aug. 1-4: Central Road, East Pole Road, Holtz Road, Lankharr Road, Lunde Road, Mecklem Road, Mission Road, Nolte Road, Thiel Road and Van Dyk Road.
▪ Marine Drive work continues north of Bellingham with lane closure delays of up to 20 minutes between Alderwood and Locust avenues for the next several weeks. Detour signs are in place.
▪ Expect delays through summer on the North Cascades Highway (Highway 20) between Sedro-Woolley and Newhalem as flood-damage repairs continue.
From 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday, Aug. 1, and Tuesday, Aug. 2, eastbound and westbound traffic at Diablo Dam Road (milepost 126-127) will alternate through a single lane for crack seal and pavement repair.
From Tuesday, Aug. 2, through Wednesday, Aug. 10 a temporary signal will control traffic on eastbound and westbound traffic on Highway 20 at Van Horn Lane in Concrete through a single lane for work on the SR 20 Skagit River fish passage project
From 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily from Wednesday, Aug. 3 through Friday, Aug. 5, eastbound and westbound traffic on Highway 20 will alternate through a single lane from Diablo Dam Road to east of the Newhalem waterfall for crack seal and pavement repair.
▪ WSDOT crews will be working on I-5 during weekends all summer long in Seattle.
Work to replace bumpy expansion joints on southbound I-5 began May 20 and plans call for lane closures to start south of I-90, which means drivers will be able to continue south on I-5 or use the “collector/distributor.”
▪ If you’re heading to Canada, officials urge travelers to check border wait times. Early morning hours have less congestion. Travelers should have their ArriveCAN receipt; passport or travel documents, proof of vaccination; and identification for everyone in the vehicle.
