This fatal collision closed I-5 south of Bellingham early Wednesday

One person is dead after they walked into traffic and were struck by a semi-truck on Interstate 5 south of Bellingham Wednesday morning.

Shortly before 5 a.m. Wednesday, a 32-year-old from Surrey, British Columbia, was driving a 2022 Volvo Tractor TK semi-trailer southbound on I-5 near milepost 225.

Larry W. Wagar, 62, of Sedro-Woolley walked into traffic. The truck driver was unable to stop in time and Wagar was pronounced dead at the scene, according to a Washington State Patrol July 27 press release.

It’s unknown if drugs or alcohol were involved in the incident, the release states.

The fatality collision closed all lanes of southbound I-5 at Anderson Road in Mount Vernon. Emergency crews diverted travelers off southbound I-5 at milepost 225 for several hours, while the incident was investigated, according to a Washington State Department of Transportation press release.

All lanes of the roadway have reopened.
