This road work will delay your commute on I-5 and in Whatcom this week
A weekend bicycle race and plenty of summertime road construction will cause delays across Whatcom County next week.
Bicyclists will be using roads throughout Whatcom County for the 2022 Tour de Whatcom, which starts at 7:30 a.m. Saturday, July 23.
Next week, a project to replace culverts that block salmon runs on Pepin Creek and Duffner Ditch will begin along East Badger Road in Lynden.
▪ From 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. Sunday, July 24, through Thursday, July 28, traffic will alternate eastbound and westbound through a single lane on East Badger Road from just east of Guide Meridian to just east of Double Ditch Road.
A full closure of East Badger Road is planned for Aug. 1-5 just east of Guide Meridian at milepost 16 to just east of Double Ditch Road at milepost 51. A signed detour will be in place.
Work associated with this fish passage project will not be conducted during the Northwest Washington Fair from Aug. 11-20.
▪ From 6 a.m. Monday, July 25, through 6 a.m. Thursday, July 28, one lane of southbound Interstate 5 at the Samish River bridge between Bow and Burlington will be closed for work on the bridge deck overlay project.
▪ From 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday, July 25, through Friday, July 29, eastbound and westbound traffic on Highway 20 at Diablo Dam Road (milepost 127-129) will alternate through a single lane for crack seal and pavement repair.
▪ From 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. Thursday, July 28, eastbound and westbound traffic on East Badger Road will alternate on a single lane for utility work between Guide Meridian and Double Ditch Road.
Continuing projects
▪ Marine Drive work continues north of Bellingham with lane closure delays of up to 20 minutes between Alderwood and Locust avenues for the next several weeks. Detour signs are in place.
▪ Expect delays through summer on the North Cascades Highway (Highway 20) from Sedro-Woolley and Newhalem as flood-damage repairs continue.
▪ WSDOT crews will be working on I-5 during weekends all summer long in Seattle.
Work to replace bumpy expansion joints on southbound I-5 began May 20 and plans call for lane closures to start south of I-90, which means drivers will be able to continue south on I-5 or use the “collector/distributor.”
▪ If you’re heading to Canada, officials urge travelers to check border wait times. Early morning hours have less congestion. Travelers should have their ArriveCAN receipt; passport or travel documents, proof of vaccination; and identification for everyone in the vehicle.
▪ Whatcom County Public Works continues its annual summer chip-sealing to resurface roads. These roads are scheduled for resurfacing during the week of July 25-29: Abbott Road, Deeter Road, Holtz Road, Lankharr Road, Mecklem Road, Minaker Road, Nolte Road, Noon Road north of Van Dyk Road, Nordum Road, North Pass Road, Polinder Road, Sealund Road, South Pass Road west of Kendall Road, Thiel Road, Van Dyk Road east of Hannegan Road.
