These pavement repairs will slow you down in Whatcom this week

Peace Portal Drive through Blaine will be closed in several locations Monday, July 4, for the Old Fashioned 4th of July parade and festival, the Washington State Department of Transportation said in its weekly road report.

Expect these closures along Peace Portal Drive, which is officially state Highway 548:

Cherry Street (milepost 13.26) to Marine Drive roundabout will be closed from 10 a.m. -1:30 p.m. Monday for the parade.

Martin Street (milepost 13.51) to G Street (milepost 13.64) will be closed from 1:30 p.m.-6 p.m. Monday for the festival.

Other WSDOT road work next week in Whatcom County includes:

The southbound I-5 on-ramp at Northwest Avenue will be closed from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. Tuesday, July 5, and Wednesday, July, 6, for crack seal pavement repair. Drivers will continue south on McLeod Road to Meridian Street and access the on-ramp.

The northbound I-5 on-ramp at Lakeway Drive in Bellingham will be closed from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. Thursday, July, 7, for crack seal pavement repair. Drivers will turn right on Potter Street then right on Lincoln Street and access the on-ramp.

Flaggers will alternate eastbound and westbound traffic on Highway 20 from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday, July 6, through a single lane between Lillian Creek and Berry Creek (milepost 136-137) for pavement repair and chip seal.

The right shoulder of eastbound Highway 20 near Moen Road (milepost 91) in Concrete will be closed from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday, July 6 through Friday, July 8, to mobilize equipment and clear the site of the Skagit River fish passage project.

Eastbound and westbound traffic on Highway 20 near Moen Road (milepost 91) in Concrete will alternate through a single lane with flaggers from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday, July 6, through Friday, July 8, so crews can begin building the temporary bypass lane that traffic will use once construction begins on the Skagit River fish passage project.

Flaggers will alternate eastbound and westbound traffic on Highway 20 through a single lane near the Diablo Lake overlook (milepost 131-132) From 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday, July 7, for pavement repair and chip seal.

Ongoing projects

These projects will slow drivers locally and along the I-5 corridor south this weekend and in the coming week:

Crews will be paving parts of the North Cascades Highway from Rockport to east of Winthrop this summer. Work will go from east to west and drivers should expect delays. A pilot car will direct traffic through some areas of the work zone and flaggers will direct traffic through other areas. Pilot car operation is limited to a 15-minute maximum hold time.

Expect delays through summer on the North Cascades Highway (Highway 20) from Sedro-Woolley to Newhalem as flood-damage repairs continue.

Artist Point clearing continues, but an opening date could be several weeks away because of heavy snow, WSDOT officials said.

Marine Drive work continues north of Bellingham with lane closure delays of up to 20 minutes between Alderwood and Locust avenues for the next several weeks. Detour signs are in place.

If you’re heading to Canada, officials urge travelers to check border wait times. Early morning hours have less congestion. Travelers should have their ArriveCAN receipt; passport or travel documents, proof of vaccination; and identification for everyone in the vehicle.
