Driving I-5 through Bellingham or to Seattle? Here’s what will slow you down
Work along Interstate 5 in Bellingham and elsewhere in Whatcom County will include lane closures both at night and during the day next week.
In addition, a series of lane closures in Seattle starts this weekend, the Washington State Department of Transportation said in its weekly traffic report.
WSDOT road work next week includes closures near Bakerview Road and south of Bellingham:
▪ A single lane in each direction of Bakerview Road in Bellingham near the new northbound on-ramp will be closed from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. Monday, May 23, through Thursday, May 26. This work is weather-dependent.
▪ The right lane of northbound I-5 north of North Lake Samish will be closed to remove rock debris from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday, May 23.
▪ The left lane of northbound I-5 at Old Fairhaven Parkway will be closed from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. Monday, May 23, and Tuesday, May 24, to install rumble strips and striping.
▪ The right lane of northbound I-5 at Old Fairhaven Parkway will be closed from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. Monday, May 23, and Wednesday, May 25, to install rumble strips and striping.
▪ Eastbound and westbound traffic on the Mount Baker Highway just east of Kelly Road in Bellingham will alternate through a single lane for utility work from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday, May 24.
▪ The left lane of southbound I-5 between Chuckanut Drive (exit 231) and Anacortes at Highway 20 (exit 230) in Burlington will be closed for guardrail repair from 10 p.m. to 4 a.m. Tuesday, May 24.
I-5 in Seattle
WSDOT crews will be working on I-5 all summer long in Seattle.
Work to replace bumpy expansion joints on southbound I-5 was to start with lane reductions as early as 7:30 p.m. on Friday, May 20, starting near Spokane Street. Plans call for lane reductions on southbound I-5 to start south of I-90, which means drivers will be able to continue south on I-5 or use the “collector/distributor.”
This work goes through the weekend and will wrap up before the morning commute on Monday, May 23.
It will be the first of about 16 weekends where lanes will be closed along this stretch of I-5 for this project.
Work is not planned the weekend of May 28-29, because of Memorial Day.
