Collision sign damage closes I-5 traffic south of Bellingham Saturday morning

Normal traffic resumed south of Bellingham on Interstate 5 Saturday afternoon, July 25, after a morning collision closed the road, according to the Washington State Department of Transportation.

A northbound Ford F250 pickup truck hauling a trailer lost control and hit the Department of Transportation sign in the center median near signpost 226, Kincaid Street, according to Washington State Patrol Trooper Anthony Reese.

The damaged sign was unsafe for southbound traffic, he said. Southbound I-5 was reopened by 2:30 p.m.

Traffic on northbound I-5 at Anderson Road got by on the shoulder, according to the state.

While alternate routes were in place, “travelers need to avoid the area until further notice and expect considerable delays through the area as traffic navigates around this closure,” according to a news release.

The State Patrol and Mount Vernon Police were investigating, according to the state transportation website.

No one was injured in the collision, Reese said.
