Driver dies near Seattle's Garfield High after crashing into dump truck

A driver was killed Wednesday morning in Seattle's Central District neighborhood after he swerved across the road into an oncoming dump truck, police say.

The driver, a 63-year-old man, was going north on 23rd Avenue when he crossed into the southbound lanes and hit head-on a dump truck going the other direction, said Seattle police spokesperson Detective Brian Pritchard.

The crash happened on the 400 block of 23rd Avenue near Garfield High School around 9 a.m., Pritchard said.

The truck driver, a 25-year-old man, called 911, Pritchard said. He showed no signs of impairment.

It's unknown why the 63-year-old driver crossed into the other lane, Pritchard said. A report from the medical examiner would reveal if he had some kind of medical emergency, and a toxicology report would determine if he was at all impaired.

Both north and southbound lanes of 23rd Avenue were blocked off, but have since been cleared, according to the Seattle Department of Transportation.
