Girl, 2, dies after Auburn crash; driver suspected of DUI

A 2-year-old girl was killed and an 8-year-old girl was seriously injured in a suspected drunken-driving crash Monday evening in Auburn.

Auburn police said the single-car crash happened around 6:20 p.m. in the Lea Hill area on 104th Avenue Southeast, according to a news release. A photo posted by police shows the car totaled after hitting a tree.

The children were airlifted to Harborview Medical Center. Both appeared to suffer critical injuries, police said. The younger girl later died.

The suspected driver, 21, was taken into police custody for investigation of driving under the influence. Kolby Crossley, a police spokesperson, said he did not know how the woman was related to the children.

Crossley said in a text message on Tuesday that the woman's blood alcohol concentration was tested, and she blew over the legal limit. He said the woman is still in (the) hospital for injuries (and) hasn't been booked yet.

The road between Lea Hill Road and Green River Road closed in both directions while investigators processed the scene.

Correction: Auburn police originally misstated the ages of the deceased girl and the suspected driver.
