Clark County sheriff's deputies close portion of Highway 99 after car crashes into power pole, catches fire

A portion of Northeast Highway 99 closed Friday morning in Hazel Dell after a vehicle crashed into a power pole.

Clark County sheriff's deputies, American Medical Response personnel and Clark County Fire District 6 firefighters responded to a single-vehicle crash in the 8200 block of Northeast Highway 99.

The vehicle, a maroon 2008 Mazda 3, caught fire following the crash and was fully engulfed in flames when emergency crews arrived on the scene. Good Samaritans helped the 44-year-old driver from the vehicle before first responders arrived, the sheriff's office said.

Emergency medical crew members took the man, the sole occupant of the vehicle, to a local hospital to be treated for injuries that were not considered life threatening, the sheriff's office said.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation, but authorities said impairment does not appear to have been a factor.

Northeast Highway 99 was closed between Northeast 78th Street and 84th Avenue while Clark Public Utilities repaired the damaged power pole and power lines. Officials expected the full closure to last until about 9:30 a.m., with one southbound lane remaining closed for much of the day.
