In Washington state, summer means warm days, cool night, barbecues and, for many, camping.
Fortunately, Washington state is home to one of the best small campgrounds in the nation, according to Campspot.
The online campsite booking platform recently named the winners of its 2026 Campspot Awards, celebrating “places that turn a simple getaway into an unforgettable adventure.”
“Whether you’re dreaming of waking up to lake views, roasting marshmallows under the stars or kicking back at a resort-style RV park, these award-winning campgrounds have it all,” Campspot said. “From stunning scenery to top-notch amenities, they’re the ones campers love most.”

What’s the best small campground in Washington state?
For its 2026 awards, Campspot singled out the top small, mid-size and large campgrounds in the United States and Canada, as well as ideal destinations for families, tent camping and recreational vehicles.
In the small campgrounds category, Campspot showcased campsites in Florida, North Carolina, Vermont and more.
“Cozy and charming, these small campgrounds deliver unforgettable experiences in an intimate setting,” Campspot said.
Only one West Coast campground made the 2026 list: Gorge Base Camp in White Salmon.
The campground is about two hours and 25 minutes from Tri-Cities by car, and a longer drive from Olympia and Tacoma.
What is Gorge Base Camp in White Salmon?
Gorge Base Camp is in the heart of the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area on the Washington side of the river.
“Our location makes us an excellent origin point to discover this beautiful part of our country,” the campground said on Tripadvisor.
It’s the “perfect location” for hiking, biking, kiteboarding, whitewater rafting and more, according to Campspot.
The campsite booking platform said the surrounding area is “rich with heritage museums, brewpubs, wineries, restaurants and exquisite shops.”
“We love this campground. ... The grounds are clean. Campers are quiet and friendly. And the (staff) is super friendly and happy to help,” Tripadvisor reviewer Connie W. wrote. “We will definitely be going back.”
According to its website, Gorge Base Camp is open year-round and offers the following amenities:
- Paved roads and paths
- Full RV hookups
- Tent camping area
- Playground
- Laundry room
- Internet access, cell reception and satellite reception
Staying at Gorge Base Camp starts at $35 to $70 a night depending on whether you opt for primitive tent camping or RV camping, according to Campspot.

According to Campspot, these were the best small campgrounds in 2026:
- Gorge Base Camp in White Salmon
- Owl’s Nest Campground in Coaldale, Alberta, Canada
- Riverwalk on the Yadkin RV Park in Jonesville, North Carolina
- Indian Mound Fish Camp in Oak Hill, Florida
- White Caps Campground in Westmore, Vermont
How did Campspot rank best camping destinations?
To determine the winners of its 2026 Campspot Awards, Campspot said it reviewed more than 3 million data points.
The campground booking platform looked at factors including guest ratings, reservation data, park features and the quality of Marketplace listing pages.
“The award-winning parks have earned distinction for their exceptional guest satisfaction and unique campground offerings,” Campspot said.
