What are the Super Bowl governors betting on the game? Here’s their wager
As the Seattle Seahawks gear up to take on the New England Patriots this weekend, the governors of Washington and Massachusetts are getting competitive.
Gov. Bob Ferguson posted on Facebook earlier this week that the Seahawks are ready for revenge ahead of Super Bowl LX. Last time the ‘Hawks headed to the NFL’s annual championship game in 2015, they lost to the Patriots 28-24.
On Thursday, Ferguson retweeted a produced video showing him and Massachusetts Gov. Maura Healey setting the terms of a friendly bet.
Healey kicked things off.
“In the unlikely event you win, here’s what we’re going to send you: Legal Sea Foods’ famous New England clam chowder and lobster rolls, maybe some East Coast oysters — the best and the only kind,” the Democrat said. “And I hear you don’t have very good coffee out there, so we’re going to throw in some Dunkin’.”
Ferguson accepted the terms.
“And if you win, which I, for a moment, do not think is going to happen, we’ll send you some of the best shellfish and coffee in the world,” he said in the short clip.
The governors aren’t the only state leaders raising the stakes. Washington House Speaker Laurie Jinkins told reporters this week that she was in the process of setting a wager alongside Senate Majority Leader Jamie Pedersen with their Massachusetts counterparts.
The Tacoma Democrat said she’d asked her caucus what she should bet. Someone suggested that if the Seahawks win, Massachusetts “ship their tax code to us.”
“Seahawks are going to win,” Jinkins added.
Ferguson and other state officials marked the start of the Seahawks’ 50th season in September at a flag-raising event outside the state Capitol in Olympia. The governor wore a white jersey honoring Dave Krieg, the team’s legendary former quarterback, and was joined by another past team titan in raising the Seahawks banner: cornerback Marcus Trufant.
This year’s Super Bowl is scheduled to start Feb. 8 at 3:30 p.m. Pacific Time and will be hosted at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California.
