The state’s vehicle theft rate was 115.2 per 100,000 residents for the first half of 2025, according to the National Insurance Crime Bureau, or NICB, which works to reduce insurance fraud and crime.
That put the Evergreen State at the 10th highest nationwide, with Washington, D.C., leading at 373.09 thefts per 100,000 residents, followed by California and Nevada.
In all, 9,168 vehicles were reported stolen in Washington in the first half of this year, per NICB, which said it analyzed data on reported thefts to create its September report.

How to protect your vehicle from getting stolen
Vehicle theft numbers in the U.S. are dropping, according to NICB.
“With 334,114 vehicle thefts reported in the first half of 2025, monthly totals of this type of crime remained consistently lower than in any month last year. These figures sustain a nationwide trend of significant declines in vehicle theft beginning in 2024,” the report said.
If the trend keeps up, “vehicle theft totals are set to decrease nationwide for the second consecutive year,” NICB said.
Vehicle thefts have fallen in Washington, too. So far this year, its numbers are down 42% compared to the first half of last year, per NICB.
To keep vehicles safe from theft, NICB recommends drivers take steps including:
- Park in areas that are well-lit
- Roll your windows up before you leave your vehicle
- Lock the doors
- Don’t leave your car or truck running when you’re not in it
- Don’t leave your keys in the vehicle
- Think about getting an audible alarm, steering wheel lock or other anti-theft technology
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration also has tips for keeping your vehicle safe from theft.
If your vehicle is stolen, here’s what you should do, according to the agency:
- Get in touch with law enforcement and file a report
- Get in touch with your insurance company and file a claim
- Contact law enforcement and your insurance company right away if you locate your vehicle before police find it
