Gas prices tend to rise in Washington state in the summer due to an increase in demand and refineries switching to a more stable gasoline blend that’s pricier to produce, as the Tri-City Herald previously reported.
Tensions in the Middle East have also impacted fuel prices in recent months.
In July, the statewide gas tax increased by $0.06 per gallon.

How do nationwide gas costs compare to Washington state?
Nationally, the average price for a gallon of regular gasoline for a gallon of regular gas was $3.16 as of Friday,July 25, according to AAA.
Rounding to the nearest full cent, the average price for gas in Washington state was significantly higher at $4.39 a gallon, the automobile association said.
Both the nationwide average and the state average dropped by seven cents from the same time last month.
In July 2024, gas in Washington state cost $4.25 a gallon on average.
As of Friday,Washington has the third highest gas prices per gallon in the country, lagging behind only California and Hawai’i, according to AAA.

On average,these Washington counties had the most expensive regular gas per gallon as of Friday, according to AAA:
San Juan County: $5.21 per gallon of regular gas
Wahkiakum County: $4.80
Pacific County: $4.76
Jefferson County: $4.72
King County: $4.66
Grays Harbor County: $4.62
Skamania County: $4.55
Mason County: $4.54
As of Friday, AAA said, the Washington counties with the least expensive gas prices per regular gallon were:
Franklin County: $4.15 per gallon of regular gas
Yakima County: $4.12
Pend Oreille County: $4.11
Stevens County: $4.09
Ferry County: $4.07
Spokane County: $3.91
Asotin County: $3.72

According to AAA, here’s how much a regular gallon of gas costs on average in these Western Washington areas as of Friday:

Mount Vernon-Anacortes: $4.20
Olympia: $4.39

According to price tracking app Gas Buddy, the cheapest gas in the Bellingham area could be found at these locations on Friday:
Costco, 4125 Arctic Ave, Bellingham: $3.69 per gallon of regular gas
Arco, 3319 Airport Drive, Bellingham: $3.69
Petro, 6890 Portal Way, Ferndale: $3.69
Arco, 8247 Guide Meridian Road, Lyndon: $3.69
Here’s where the most affordable fuel in the Olympia area could be found, GasBuddy said:
