Six people and two dogs needed rescuing after a large wave shattered a boat’s windshield in Washington waters, rescuers said.

The group was in the Rosario Strait during “nasty weather” Saturday, March 9, the U.S. Coast Guard Station in Bellingham said in a Facebook post.

“Winds were 20 knots sustained with 30 knot gusts with 4’ - 6’ seas,” officials said.

A wave then smashed the boat’s windshield. The glass injured some of the people onboard, rescuers said.

Four of the boaters were rescued by a Washington State Ferry before the Coast Guard reached them.

Then the Coast Guard helped get the remaining two people and the two dogs, Buster and Belle, to safety.

One rescuer navigated the damaged boat to a marina in Anacortes, officials said.

Rosario Strait is in northwestern Washington.
