Powdered formula recalled amid infant botulism cases in WA, 9 other states
The Washington State Department of Health is investigating an outbreak of botulism potentially linked to a powdered infant formula widely available in Washington and other states. Cases have been reported in 13 infants, including one from Lewis County, Washington.
Two batches of ByHeart Whole Nutrition Infant Formula have been voluntarily recalled following a broader botulism outbreak investigation by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. More than 80 cases of infant botulism were reported nationwide since August, according to the FDA, and 13 had received ByHeart formula at some point.
No ByHeart product has tested positive for any contaminants, but officials are still urging caution.
The state department of health recommends that anyone who has recently purchased ByHeart Whole Nutrition Infant Formula throw away or return the formula. If you still have the container, record the lot number first.
You should also wash any items and surfaces that may have touched the formula using hot, soapy water or a dishwasher.
What is infant botulism?
Botulism is a rare, muscle-paralyzing disease caused by bacteria. Symptoms in infants include poor feeding, loss of head control, difficulty swallowing and decreased facial expression. If your infant has any of these and has consumed ByHeart Whole Nutrition Infant Formula, seek immediate medical care.
Symptoms can take several weeks to develop.
