Apple juice recalled in Florida, California, 26 other states for possible toxin

Martinelli’s recalled about 173,616 bottles of apple juice sold in the company’s signature glass jars in 28 states because they might be contaminated with the toxin patulin.

Patulin’s commonly found in rotting apples.

This recall gained broader knowledge this week when the FDA classified this as a Class II recall and put it in its daily enforcement report list. Martinelli’s alerted consignees by email, but issued no press release for the public.

What caused the Martinelli’s apple juice to be recalled?

The enforcement alert says the apple juice might have patulin.

Patulin is classified as a dangerous secondary mycotoxin. Its synthesis is attributed to around 60 different harmful fungi,” a 2024 article posted on the National Library of Medicine website states. “Previous research has reported that the consumption of this substance has been associated with the promotion of gastrointestinal and neurological complications.”

The FDA calling this a Class II recall means using or being exposed to the recalled product “may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences” or “the probability of serious adverse health consequences is remote.”
